Wonderland Amusement Park

 

Wonderland Amusement Park is and has been an ideal place for a family to relax and have fun for a reasonable price for 71 years. Voted the 2009 Park of the Year by Amusement Today, Wonderland is home to the Texas Tornado, one of the top-rated, double-loop steel roller coasters in the nation, and to over 30 rides, attractions, and miniature golf. Open weekends April through Labor Day, and open weeknights from mid-April through the start of school in August, it can all be summed up in one word: WOW!

Cadillac Ranch

 

The world’s only! Ten Cadillacs buried nose-down in a field at the same angle as the Cheops Pyramid. It has been stopping visitors since 1974. Find it on the south access road of I-40 just east of the Arnot Rd. exit. It is open 24/7/365 and there is no admission.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

 

The 2nd largest canyon in America and one of America’s most magnificent scenic attractions, located just 25 miles southeast of Amarillo. Enjoy extraordinary vistas of color and beauty from the comfort of your automobile. Travel the same trails used by Native Americans, early Spanish explorers, buffalo hunters, and pioneers. The park has more than 25,000 acres of room to roam and offers camping, cabins, riding stables, picnicking, and miles or hiking, mountain bike and horse trails. Hours of Operation: Spring (March – May) Sunday – Thursday: 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday – Saturday: 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Amarillo Museum of Art

 

The Amarillo Museum of Art (AMoA) features permanent and temporary exhibits housed in an Edward Durrell Stone-designed, three-story museum. Collections include American photography, paintings, prints, drawings, and sculptures; the Price Collection of Asian Art; Tibetan Tsakli and Manuscripts, and European paintings. Temporary exhibits have featured Grace Hartigan, Dante Maroni, Jasper Johns, and George Rouault and many other artists. AMoA is on the campus of Amarillo College and is open Tuesday-Friday from 10 am – 5 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 1 pm – 5 pm. Admission is free.

Panhandle Plains Historical Museum

 

The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum is the largest history museum in Texas. It’s so big, you can cover more than 26,000 square miles of Texas, all under one roof. The museum is located 15 minutes south of Amarillo on the campus of West Texas A&M University in Canyon, TX. Winter museum hours (September-May) are Tuesday-Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. The PPHM is a Blue Star Museum.

Wildcat Bluff Nature Center

 

Wildcat Bluff Nature Center covers about one square mile of land in western Amarillo. It is a great place to hike, bird watch, and enjoy the local flora and fauna. Several hiking trails are open: Libb’s Trail is handicapped-accessible, fairly short and is always free to use. Serious hikers will enjoy the Bluff, Windmill and Prairie Loop Trails, each offers a traditional hiking experience of varying lengths. All trails are open sunrise to sunset, year-round. Be sure to bring lots of water for your hike. Office is open 9 to 4 Tuesday-Saturday and trails are open every day of the year, sunrise to sunset!
