Each year, the orchestra sponsors the WTAMU STUDENT COMPOSERS COMPETITION, an initiative founded by former music director Jacomo Bairos that presents the annual opportunity for student composers from West Texas A&M University to submit their best work for the chance to either hear their work performed live in rehearsal or to have their work premiered in performance by the Amarillo Symphony.
